Wiltshire Cricket reports huge growth in Disability Cricket in 2022
Table Cricket – Lords Taverners
What is Table Cricket?
Table Cricket is one of our main forms of disability provision funded by the Lord’s Taverners. Within Wiltshire, Table Cricket is currently a school-based programme where schools receive 6 hours of delivery incorporating a variety of activities on batting, bowling and fielding. The sport is a team game, played around a table-tennis table, utilising fine motor skills, operating in an identical way to that of traditional cricket:
- Batters – Score as many runs as possible
- Bowlers – Try to take wickets and prevent runs being scored
- Fielders – Be ready to stop the ball and prevent runs being scored
Table Cricket offers a fantastic opportunity for those individuals that may struggle to access more traditional forms of disability cricket (Super 1s) and sport in general, whilst still being able to provide a wide variety of benefits that more mainstream sports provide. Participating in Table Cricket gives young people an opportunity to develop their communication, leadership and teamworking skills, as well as many additional sport-specific skills such as, coordination and ball-striking, all whilst having fun with their friends.
Table Cricket has seen fantastic growth during the 2022/23 academic year:
- 18 schools
- 200+ participants
- 2 Finals Days
- Young Leaders Programme
- 11 Table Cricket Champion Schools
Super 1s Programme – Lords Taverners
What is Super 1s?
Super 1s is a cricket-based programme run throughout Wiltshire, giving young people with disabilities the opportunity to play cricket regularly (aged 12-25). The aim of the programme is to use cricket as a tool for participant’s personal development, equipping them with a variety of personal, social and transferable skills that can be taken into a variety of different situations.
Super 1s sessions are run on a weekly/bi-weekly basis, for around 1 hour in the evenings. Within Wiltshire there will be a total of 4 hubs (Swindon, Chippenham, Salisbury and Westbury), incorporating a series of different activities developing throwing, catching and ball striking skills. During these sessions participants get the opportunity to try new activities, meet new people and explore new environments.

Super 9s – Disability Pathway
The development of Super 1s has enabled the progression of the disability pathway. Super 9s participants are selected from the pool of participants involved with the Super 1s Programme, who are looking to play a more competitive form of cricket.
What is Super 9s?
Super 9s players are selected by Wiltshire Cricket from the pool of Super 1s participants around the county. You are receiving this email as your son/daughter has been selected to be part of the Super 9s Wiltshire Squad for 2023. Super 9s is an extension of Super 1s with a greater focus on improving cricket skills and then having the opportunity to apply these skills playing against other counties in games, 8 players per side.
This programme is a structured, lightly competitive format of cricket designed to give participants the chance to play in game environments. Super 9s has a slightly larger focus on cricketing development when compared to Super 1s, with the same overriding values of enjoyment and personal development.
Disability Cricket Champions Clubs – ECB Initiative
Growing disability cricket has been a real focus since our disability venture began in 2020. As an organisation, we started delivery of our Super 1s Programme in mid-2021 and have seen great progression within the programme, starting 2022 with 4 established Super 1s Hubs with over 55 participants.
As Wiltshire Cricket looks to make disability cricket more sustainable, far-reaching, and engrained within the county of Wiltshire. A fundamental part of this development will be our partnership with forward-thinking, committed local clubs who are motivated to drive disability cricket forward.
Growing Disability Cricket:
Continuing our pursuit to grow disability cricket provision we are looking to work with local clubs to help promote, facilitate, and develop disability cricket through the ECB Disability Cricket Champions Club initiative.
Wiltshire Cricket aims to work alongside local clubs to develop disability cricket in all aspects, including:
- Providing venues for Super 1s Hubs
- Providing volunteer coaches for Super 1s Hubs
- Promoting disability cricket provision:
- Distributing/displaying flyers within your club
- Sharing disability opportunities on social media
- Developing a disability sector and delivering disability provision
