Wiltshire Cricket's First Ever Super 1s Disability Festival

The 25th of February marked Wiltshire first ever Super 1s Cricket Festival. The Super 1s Programme is funded by the Lords Taverners, focusing on using cricket as a tool for individuals with a disability to develop transferable, social, and personal skills to use in environments outside of cricket.

For the first time ever, all Wiltshire and Gloucestershire Super 1s participants were invited to take part in the festival and come together at a central venue.

The festival took place at the Bristol County Ground in partnership with the Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation and their Super 1s Programme.

During the day participants the chance to get stuck into a variety of opportunities including:

  • Healthy Eating Workshop
  • Why Recycle? Workshop
  • Super 1s Cricket
  • Changing Room and Stadium Tour

Healthy Eating Workshop

The Healthy Eating Workshop was run by one of our great volunteers, Leah. Participants got to explore their understanding of the importance of eating healthily, in a practical workshop.

Participants worked with each other to sort foods into healthy and unhealthy categories, before creating their very own set of healthy and unhealthy meals.

Why Recycle? Workshop

The Recycling Workshop was led by another fantastic volunteer, Rachel. Participants got to show off their knowledge of recycling, whilst learning about the potential uses of recyclable products.

Using recyclable products, participants were able to make a series of cricket-related items including a bat and a ball to take home as evidence of their learning.

Super 1s Cricket

Throughout the 2-hour festival, Wiltshire Cricket coaches delivered 2 hours of Super 1s cricket. Throughout the 2 hours participants got to experience a variety of different fast-paced batting, bowling, and fielding activities on a larger scale.

This was a first for many, as having the opportunity to try cricket on a larger scale meant that participants were able to try games and activities that wouldn’t be possible with their respective Super 1s Hubs. This resulted in participants exploring, trying new things, and showcasing learning at the festival.

Changing Room and Stadium Tour

In small groups participants were given a tour of the Bristol County Ground (home to Gloucestershire CCC).

The tour began with a trip to the players dining area, Super 1s participants got to see where Gloucestershire’s professional cricketers fuelled up for a training session or match day.

Next was the home changing room. Each participant got the opportunity to see what a high-performing teams changing room looked like. Individuals got the chance sit in the same places as their role models, as well as see the great equipment and facilities within the room.

The tour concluded with a trip to the away changing room. Participants again explored the facilities that a professional changing room had to offer, before returning into the sports hall to continue with their Super 1s cricket.

Overall, the day proved to be a great success for all involved. Wiltshire Cricket would like to thank the Lords Taverners, GCF and volunteers, parents/carers for their continued support with both the Super 1s and Table Cricket Programmes.

The partnership with the Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation and their Super 1s Programme was fundamental in enabling the festival to take place, as well as being able to reach a wider range of Super 1s participants.

Finally, Wiltshire Cricket gives thanks to all the volunteers, parents/carers and participants for their continued support with Super 1s, facilitating growth and allowing disability cricket to have a powerful impact upon those it reaches.
