Youth Cricket: Other Leagues

Kennet Junior League

The Kennet league was started about 9 years ago, to provide competitive cricket for junior players from villages in the Kennet Area. Over time the clubs have changed and spread outside the Kennet area, but it continues to provide an introduction to league cricket for many young players.

The format is 20 overs per side for players under 13, and is generally played by mixed age players from 9 upwards. There is a ‘retire at 25’ rule, and the emphasis is on competitive but friendly games. It is important to us that playing fairly has a greater priority than winning.  Umpires are expected to encourage their own and the opposition players and offer words of advice, without trying to run the game. The League expects honesty in talking to opposing managers so that teams can be selected with regard to the strength of the opposition. This is a “starters” league, and walkovers are strongly discouraged

Currently the teams are divided into East and West divisions, games played normally on a Thursday evening, and comprise  Beanacre, Erlestoke, Potterne, Shrewton, Steeple Langford and Tisbury in the West division and All Cannings, Bishops Cannings,  Burbage/Collingbourne, Marlborough and Spye Park/Goatacre in the East.

We are also running some under 11 games, and a new under 15 league is being introduced this year.

We would be please to see this league spread across the county as a foundation league, with the Wiltshire league available for the stronger and more experienced players.

Salisbury and District Youth League

This league is the newset within the County and was only established in 2005. The need for this league was apparent when more and more small village clubs in the Salisbury area and surrounding villages began running youth sections at their cricket clubs. The league currently is only a small U11 competition for 4/5 teams.

Competing teams this season are Longford Park, Shrewton, Steeple Langford and Tisbury. League competition is on home & away basis followed by a cup competition. The league are hopeful of forming an U13 league next season as interest in cricket around the Salisbury area is growing.
