Wiltshire County U10’s Vs SE Hants U10’s - Sunday 22nd June ‘08
Wiltshire Under 10’s travelled down to Grayshott for their first game of the season. With limited time to practise together, due to the weather, it was always going to be difficult to gel as a team straight away.
Wiltshire arrived on a windy afternoon, Josh Hodder (Capt.) won the toss and elected to field first. Openers Stan Alsop (4-0-21-0) and Scott Twine (4-0-8-0) found it difficult to control the ball in the early stages due to the wind. Scott only 8 years old, bowled very well in particular. However, Wiltshire continued to struggle, bowling a little to short with Christian (56) taking a liking to it. After the drinks break, Wiltshire re-grouped and bowled a lot better, Billy Rudolf (4-1-18-2) set the tone, bowling a good line and length, in doing so, getting out Christian, caught at mid-wicket. SE Hants tried to push the score on in the later stages and with Spinners Josh Hodder (4-0-21-1) and Fraser Gordon (4-0-31-0) doing well, both of them went for runs in their last over. SE Hants finished their 30 overs on 175 for 6.
In reply, Wiltshire started off like a steam train, with 50 runs coming off the first 5 overs for the loss of one wicket, the Hants openers also found it hard to control the ball early on. Adam Thompson (20) batted very well and so did Sam Arnold (20) these two put on 40 for the second wicket. However, Hants put the brakes on and bowled tight lines, giving Wiltshire nothing. This obviously slowed the run rate down and Wiltshire were always going to struggle to get the total. Elijah Samuel (8) bated extremely well; he played very straight and never looked like getting out until he was caught behind. Stan Alsop (12*) also batted well towards the end of the innings. Wiltshire finished their innings on 118 for 8.
Wiltshire can take a lot from this first game of the season. It is a big step up from Club cricket to county cricket and they will learn an awful lot as the season goes on. This team has some good players and hopefully as the season progresses they will experience things that will help them in the future.
