Wiltshire v Somerset - Saturday 24th May @ Bishops Cannings

Scorecard

The game was played using the Barrington rules of 2 for a wide or no-ball and no extra ball and drinks were taken at 10 and 20 overs. We played with 10-a-side as Somerset were let down late on.

The conditions were warm but very windy making it difficult for bowlers who on a number of occasions had to pull up as they were being buffeted in a cross wind. Marina More captain for the day won the toss and elected to bat on an excellent track. R. Sayers and H. Morgan opening got Wiltshire of to a flyer with good running and some excellent boundary’s before Morgan was out for 11 in the 4 over with the score on 25. Sayers continued in 2 more partnerships before being 3rd out for 17 with the score on 49 in the 11 over.  The score continued to build as the girl’s benefited from a fast out field with everyone contributing. The final score of 138 for 7 from 30 overs was always going to be challenging. M. More top scoring for Wiltshire with 19.

After tea Somerset struggled to get runs as tight bowling and excellent support from the fielders made life difficult for the bats. M. More as captain again used this game to give bowlers experience and everyone contributed by either giving no runs away or taking wickets. M. More herself bowled aggressively but the pick of the bowlers were J Brown 4-2-9-3 and H Morgan 3-3-0-1. The fielding was much improved with R. Sayers keeping wicket very tidally and 3 catches being taken. Again at the fall of the last wicket the game continued to 30 overs giving all our girl’s the opportunity to bowl and some of Somerset’s bats another innings. The Somerset bat who benefited most from this was the Wiltshire girl we loaned to them at the start to balance the sides, Ellie Harries hitting an aggressive 25 not out to go with her 7 first time around.

Wiltshire v Somerset - Sunday 11th May @ Kings School Bruton

The game was played using the Barrington rules of 2 for a wide or no-ball and no extra ball and drinks were taken at 10 and 20 overs.Wiltshire Under 13's began their season with a fixture against Somerset Girls Under 13's. On a very hot day Wiltshire went to King’s Bruton to play Somerset for there first ever girls county age group side in Wiltshire and so everyone involved can be very proud of their efforts in bringing Wiltshire to this stage of Girls Cricket development.

Somerset fielded a strong side in there last friendly before the county championship started. Somerset won the toss and elected to bat. India Newman captaining opened the bowling with Marina More and herself and they applied good pressure with only 23 runs for 2 wickets coming of the first 8 overs. Newman capturing the wicket of the strong opener G. West for 12 runs and the other opener Adock being run out. Newman then rotated her bowlers using 8 in an attempt to give as many as possible a chance to experience county hard ball cricket for the first time. M. More finished with figures of 6-1-14-1, I. Newman 6-1-18-1 and Pipi V-Clarke 4-1-6-1. A steady fielding performance resulted in 2 run outs and Somerset finished on 115 for 8.

After tea Wiltshire’s batting struggled against the pace of the Somerset attack though wides and good running when given the chance kept the score moving. A mid innings partnership between R. Sayers who top scored with 11 and E. Royle was cruelly broken when Royle’s finger was broken and she retired hurt. Wiltshire were finally all out for 74 for 9 in the 24 over with 1 retired. The coaches agreed to play on to 30 overs and allow the girl’s on both sides more practice. The Wiltshire bats that got back in showed greater confidence and benefited from the experience of scoring some runs. Somerset deserved there win but all our girl’s enjoyed the experience and benefited from the exposure to hard ball cricket over 30 overs.

On the day Wiltshire lost to Somerset by 41 runs with Somerset batting first and posting 115-7 from their 30 overs. For Somerset K Kohn (13) and G West (12) were the leading batters but for Wiltshire the wickets were spread across five bowlers with J Brown leading the attack and returning figures of 2-18 from her 4 overs.
