Wiltshire v Oxfordshire - 22/23/24 June

Wiltshire continued their improved form in their latest Minor Counties Championship match against Oxfordshire at Challow and Childrey C C on Sunday/Monday/Tuesday when the match played on a near perfect batting pitch and dominated by the batsmen on both sides ended in a draw.  Oxfordshire won the toss and chose to bat and after a solid start, Ross Crick was introduced to the attack and took the wicket of James Hewitt with his first ever ball in Minor County cricket and finished with 3 for 32 off 13 overs.  James Hibberd took 3 for 51, Damian Shirazi 2 for 22 and Rob Travers 2 for 111 as Oxfordshire were all out for 262.  Wiltshire’s all rounder James Hayward broke his thumb fielding before lunch and was not able to take any further part in the match and is likely to be out for about 4/6 weeks.  In reply Wiltshire lost Tom Morton for 10 but this was followed by an exhilarating century stand between Damian Shirazi who was out for 38 in the last over of the day and James Vince who dominated the partnership reaching 74 not out at the close of play.  James played strokes all round the ground with his 50 coming off only 27 balls and including 10 fours.

Wiltshire stared the second day at 128 for 2 and their batsmen continued to dominate.  Vince was finally out for 87 but Richard Bedbrook (103) scored his maiden Minor Counties century and with James Hibberd (78 not out) Wiltshire’s innings closed after 90 overs at 374 for 7 and maximum batting points.  In reply, Oxfordshire lost early wickets to Dudley Graham (3 for 92) and Ross Crick (1 for 32) and if Nathan Hawkes had been caught before he reached double figures they would have lost 4 wickets before they had cleared the deficit.  However after his escape he scored 92 and with Rob Williams who made a massive 169 not out they made Wiltshire work very hard for their wickets.  With Hayward unable to bowl, off-spinner Rob Travers put in a marathon spell bowling 40 overs to take 1 for 143 as Wiltshire contributed with a series of dropped catches and after lunch on the third day Oxford declared at 398 for 5 leaving Wiltshire a minimum of 50 overs to score 287 to win.  Damian Shirazi scored a brilliant 106 but with his only real support coming from James Hibberd 42 not out the match petered out into a draw with Wiltshire 218 for 5.

Wiltshire v Devon - Sunday 4th May

Wiltshire once again suffered a heavy defeat away to Devon on Sunday in their second group match of the MCCA trophy at Exmouth, this time losing by 7 wickets.  Put in to bat on an early season bowler friendly pitch, Wiltshire had no answer to the Devonseam bowling quartet of Ian Bishop (2 for 18), Neil Hancock (1 for 25), S. Barlow (3 for 22) and Trevor Anning (4 for 17) as they were bowled out for 91 in 33.5 overs.  Only Damian Shirazi with a determined and patient 47 applied himself in the difficult conditions.  No other batsman reached double figures as they succumbed to a combination of unplayable balls and injudicious shots.

Devon in reply were soon in trouble at 22 for 3, with Alex Senneck taking 2 for 31 and Richard Bedbrook 1 for 17, but then Neil Hancock and David Court mixing watchful defence with controlled aggressive shots produced the only partnership of the day putting on 70 for the 4th wicket to see Devon home in only 23.1 overs.

Wiltshire’s next match in the competition in on Sunday May 18th againstBerkshireat Trowbridge (11amstart), with it looking as if they will have to win both this and the final match against Herefordshire (away on June 1st) to qualify for the quarter finals.
