2008 ASDA Kwik Cricket Festivals

North Wiltshire Festival - Corsham CC, 6th June & Biddestone CC, 10th June

Over 200 children have been involved in the local qualifying round of Kwik cricket festivals in North Wiltshire District Council as part of the national Asda Kwik Cricket competition. Two festivals were held in the first week of events, for both mixed teams and girls only teams, all of whom were competing to represent North Wiltshire at the County Finals to be held at Trowbridge CC on the 27th June.

The first event at Corsham CC on the 6th June for mixed teams saw a strong challenge from Sherston primary school who won their three group games convincingly. They were joined in the finals by Stanton St Quintin and Derry Hill both of whom managed to qualify from their difficult group. St Edmunds, who won through to the County Finals last year, also made the semi-finals but were then beaten by 21 runs by Derry Hill in a re-match of last years final. In the other semi final Stanton scored 278 to Sherston’s 247 to make it through to the final where they proved to be too strong for Derry Hill who slipped to a 24 run defeat.

Corsham CC hosted a wonderful afternoon of cricket and thanks should be give to all their young players who helped out on the day.

Biddestone CC also did a sterling job of managing the Girls Only kwik cricket festival that took place on the 10th June, and 12 teams entered what turned out to be a fantastic event with some superb cricket on display. This was the second year of this event and the standard of play was considerably higher on this occasion than it was last year. Two groups of 5 teams competed for 4 semi final places and with 80 girls involved in cricket on a sunny afternoon it was great to watch.

The boundaries were regularly peppered and some great catching and fielding prevented further runs. Bob Powell, the co-ordinator for Girls Cricket in Wiltshire was very impressed and commented that the standard was higher than some of the mixed festivals being played around the county.

In group 1 St Edmunds, Minety and St Sampsons proved to be the teams to beat and whilst St Edmunds topped the group with 18 points the two northern teams finished tied in second on 16 points. Minety progressed onto the semi finals by virtue of taking more wickets in the group stages. Group 2 was equally as tight with 3 teams finishing the group stages on 18 points. St Peter’s were the winners of the group with 12 wickets taken, St Marys finished second with 10 and Kings Lodge just missing out with 8 wickets taken.

In the semi’s the two favourites won through comfortably and qualified for the county finals. Minety beat St Mary’s and St Edmunds won their game with St Peters, following this up with a comprehensive victory over Minety in the final by 36 runs. A great afternoon was had by all and Alex Muse, Sports development officer for North Wiltshire was justifiably happy with the opportunities that all schools had received in both festivals.

Salisbury Festivals - 6th June 2008

Dozens of local schools went into bat for the ASDA Kwik Cricket Competition on 6th June in the Salisbury District.

The tournament was split into two mixed events, one at South Wilts CC and one at Wyvern College, as well as the Girls Festival at South Wilts CC.

In the South Wilts event the semi finals saw Nomansland narrowly beat the Great Wishford team by 5 runs while the Dinton A team triumphed over Mere with their total of 223 runs.

The final had all spectators on the edge of their seats. Showing great skill and determination, Nomansland took the winning honours with 210 runs to Dinton A’s 188 runs.

In only the second ever girl’s competition, also held atSouth Wilts Cricket Club, the standard was very high. Broadchalke triumphed over Wilton & Barford in a closely fought match with Broadchalke scoring 231 runs to Wilton & Barford’s 215 runs.

In the Wyvern College festival, Winterslow beat Winterbourne to take the Kwik Cricket title. Woodford Valley came a very close third.

The winners and runners up of the two mixed festivals, Nomansland, Winterslow and Winterbourne (together with Great Wishford, replacing Dinton who are unable to take part), and the winners and runners up in the girls competition, Broadchalke and St Mark’s, will now go onto the county finals at Trowbridge Cricket Club on Friday 27 June.

The Kwik Cricket Festivals were organised by Salisbury District Council, the Wiltshire Cricket Board, Wyvern College and the Salisbury and Avon valley School Sports Partnerships.

The event was supported by the team of volunteers from local cricket clubs and pupils from Wyvern College and St Edmund’s who helped to score and umpire on the day.

Karlene Jammeh, Salisbury District Council’s sports and community officer, said: “All of the matches, from the early rounds up to the two finals, were of an extremely high standard. The quality of play was exciting and the children’s enthusiasm shone throughout the day.

“I’d also like to personally thank the students from Wyvern College and St Edmund’s Sports College for doing such a fantastic job umpiring and scoring on the day.

“We now wish the six teams that are going to represent the district in the county final the very best of luck.”

Broadchalke were the worthy winners of the Girls district festival at South Wilts CC on 6th June. Congratulations to all of the girls involved!

Broadchalke Girls           Kennet District Festivals 2008

In Kennet 3 Festivals were held during the week with 350 9, 10 and 11 year old boys and girls taking part in Kwik Cricket.

As so many school teams wished to enter the Kennet Kwik cricket Festivals in 2007 Kennet DC put on three festivals this year at Devizes CC, Marlborough CC and Collingbourne CC.

Supporting each of these festivals were trained students from the neighbouring secondary schools, 17 Devizes School Young Sport Leaders, 12 Castledown Young Sport Leaders and 8 St John's Sport Leaders.

All the sport leaders were given in set training on scoring and umpiring from the WCB Community Coaches. This helped greatly as it meant that the teachers that were the team leaders/managers at each festival were able to support their team and watch them play rather than have to help with the scoring or umpiring. The Teachers were extremely happy about this. The young leaders did a fantastic job of all the scoring and umpiring and made sure all the children had a wonderful day of playing cricket.

Despite the weather all our festivals went ahead and mostly and surprisingly all in total sunshine!. Even hats and sunscreen had to be put on !!!

Each of the festivals were supported by the Wiltshire Cricket Development Manager, Steve Silk and his Community Coaches.  They supported each event and were able to talent spot some young players boys and girls and encourage them to join their local cricket club if not already a member. However they were very impressed with the overall standard of the cricket played this year and how many girls were playing. Some of the matches were very close – some won by just a single run or wicket. KDC have said that next year it will try a girls only Kwik Cricket Festival especially as they are now getting so many girl members in the local cricket clubs. It will be played along side one of the Mixed Kwik cricket festivals.

A quote from one of the schools involved ‘Can I take the opportunity to say how much we enjoyed our first ever cricket festival.  It's great to take part in a competition where the pupils are involved for so much of the time - so many team competitions involve them (necesssarily) being on for 5 or 7  minutes and then off again.  The cricket really gave the chance fo them to get the feel of the game and the team play involved’. Liz Davies (Oare Primary School)
